THE MIZPA
Summer Home - Charlevoix ...... Winter Home - Chicago

This 185 ft. luxury yacht was launched in 1926. It was ordered by Mrs. Cadwalder of Palm Beach. She sold it to James Elverson, and in 1929  sold it to founder and President of the Zenith Radio Corporation, Cmdr. Eugene McDonald, Jr., of Chicago. Cmdr. Mcdonald used the MIZPA as his Chicago residence and as a vehicle for the testing of electronic innovations. It was on the MIZPA that the earliest type of radar was tried, and though extremely crude it was found to be effective. The full potential of radar was not realized until the Second World War.

The MIZPA was taken over by the Navy in 1942 and served in a convoy escort group as the PY-29. She was the flag ship of the convoy group.

The last twenty years of her life were spent in the South American fruit trade. Disabled with a broken crank shaft, she was purposely sunk off Palm Beach to form an artificial reef to encourage fish habitation.
