September 20, 1898 Allen M. Wilkinson leaves next Monday for Ann Arbor to resume his studies at the university. ____________________________ Potato buyers claim that "tubers" are not likely to bring the handsome price this fall that was paid for them last season. Between 30 and 50 cents per bushel is the estimated price to be paid, at which the farmers probably will not complain. ____________________________ October 4, 1898 John M. Ackert is putting a steam heating plant in the Odd Fellows building. ____________________________ On Wednesday morning last, the corner stone of the new St. Joseph's Catholic church at this place was laid with the usual ceremonies. Bishop Richter of Grand Rapids, was present and officiated assisted by Fr. Sabine.-East Jordan Enterprise ____________________________ October 11, 1898 Ray Faulkner is attending school at Traverse City, where his father goes to-day to open up a restaurant. ____________________________ Geo. W. Beaman has sold his drug business in this village to Mr. Harry D. Luke of Petoskey, who will take possession about Saturday and run the business at the same stand. Mr. Beaman goes to Detroit to continue his medical studies. ____________________________ From a letter written from Camp Mead, Pa., by Sergeant Frank Wilkinson, Co. C-35th Mich. Infantry, to a Charlevoix friend we are permitted to extract the following: "I have seen Jay Palmer, formerly of Charlevoix. He is in the 10th Ohio regiment. I was going along about dark and saw a man with a paper in his hand, As he came closer I recognized the familiar headline of the Charlevoix Sentinel. I stopped him and said, 'Say, you are from Charlevoix.' He looked around and said 'Yes.' As soon as he spoke I knew him. He likes soldiering and says it agrees with him." ____________________________ October 18, 1898 President Harry Nicholls is in Chicago this week, hobnobbing with President McKinley. ____________________________ Manager Barry of Traverse City, has received instructions from the Michigan Telephone Company to commence furnishing subscriptions for resident telephones at the rate of $12, per year, dating from October First. ____________________________ December 13, 1898 The steamer Hackley is still in commission, and expects to go to the Island to-day. She will run as long as old Pete's nerve holds out, and that means a good deal. ____________________________ December 20, 1898 Miss Belle Hines of Ohio, is here to spend the holidays with her parents. ____________________________ Dr. Levi Lewis is finally settled down in his new Dixon Avenue residence. The doctor with his usual energy and enterprise has built a residence that is a credit to that beautiful street and to Charlevoix. ____________________________ Capt. Finucan and mate Alexander of the steamer City of Charlevoix, arrived home for the winter on Friday last. |
