Nettleton Artist - Historian Died Thursday Mrs. Rosa Nettleton, 91, pioneer resident, artist and historian, died Thursday afternoon at her home at 202 Burns St. following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Winchester funeral home with the Rev. James Sherman officiating. Burial was in Brookside cemetary. Born in London, England, March 6, 1868, the former Rosa Saunders came to Toronto, Ont., as a child and to Charlevoix in 1891. On Oct. 29, 1892, she was married to David C. Nettleton, pioneer settler, abstractor and civil engineer who had surveyed a large section of the city of Charlevoix and for whom a street is named. From records kept by her husband and information she had gathered after coming to northern Michigan, Mrs. Nettleton compiled an early history of Charlevoix which she presented to the Charlevoix public library. She also wrote poetry, but was best known for her oil paintings. She was a member of the Charlevoix chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the First Congregational church and the Tuesday Study club. Surviving are one son, Arthur, of Charlevoix; two sisters, Miss Ellen Saunders and Mrs. Minnie Craig and two brothers, Fred and Alfred Saunders, all of Toronto. |
